reindeer ornaments 1In the real world, the majestic reindeer is found in northern Scandinavia where they live on the frozen Artic tundra and are herded by Laps. They are a source of income for the local people, a food source, even their droppings are sold for profit!  But still they have a large role to play in the Lapland tourist trade giving beautiful sleigh rides through the snow with tinkling bells and bright torch lights.  This is most certainly an amazing experience to remember if you are tempted!

The Root of the Christmas story of Santa and his Team of Deer

Santa Claus story began with the fairly modern poem by Clement Clarke Moore in 1822 originally called “A Visit From Saint Nicholas” later referred to as “The Night Before Christmas” where his homeland is set in the snowy north – which over time became the North Pole.  The type of deer found in this locale was the Reindeer and they became the beasts of burden for Santa’s sleigh.  Originally, the story began in Europe in Holland or Germany and this is the reason behind the Germanic names of the deer. It is believed that Donner and Blitzen were actually Dunder and Blixem originally, but it was a team of eight deer to start with.  This became nine with the addition of little Rudy in 1939, when Robert May a Montgomery employee developed a story for children, built on the original Christmas tale. He invented a shy but cute,  red nosed Reindeer who joined the team and ultimately saved the day!  Rudolph was an instant hit and this poetic story was almost immediately made into the famous song we know so well.
